Mariam Mokhtar is one of our students in our hackerspace in Cairo, Egypt. The 23-year old works as a moderator on social media. But today, she wants to develop her skills to get more opportunities in the future. That’s why she chose to study FullStack JS development at GOMYCODE Egypt.
First contact with the world of coding
Even though she worked in the digital world as a community manager, Mariam didn't know much about web development: "I didn't know what to expect, or what was going to happen since I had no experience in the field of web development" explains our student, who confirms that having found GOMYCODE was a truly eye-opening experience for her.
"We started with the basics. To be honest, I was reassured because it turned out to be easier than I had imagined, although I needed help at the start, and sincerely I found the help I needed. Then, step by step, I was able to better understand things and I was able to move forward on my own. It's really a fun and challenging journey!"
A different teaching model
What especially caught Mariam’s attention was the way of teaching at GOMYCODE. It was far removed from traditional standards. Unlike the latter, GOMYCODE's model is based on active learning: "What I can say about GOMYCODE is that it's a whole different way of teaching, totally different from what we are used to in classical education. In conventional teaching, you come to class, you passively take notes, you memorize and you regurgitate that on the day of the exam.
Here, the instructor is always present and by your side. He helped me a lot and I really appreciate his support. I truly think without my instructor’s presence and patience I would never have known what to do" explains Mariam before concluding with a piece of advice:
"Always be learning! Learn as early as possible. As soon as you have the opportunity to learn new skills, do it. It is much easier to learn when you are young because you have more time and more flexibility to learn. Never hold back!".
